Did you know that vitamins can be fat soluble or water soluble?
The fat soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K are stored in the body for long periods of time. These vitamins are stored in the liver and are better absorbed by the body when consumed with a good fat source.
However, the water soluble vitamins B and C, are carried to the body’s tissues but are not stored in the body. These vitamins don’t needed to be consumed with a fat for better absorption. Because they are water soluble, these vitamins need to be consumed daily, as they get excreted from our bodies daily and are not stored.
We can get all the vitamins that our body needs from eating a variety of foods from each food group each day.
Supplementation is NOT necessary unless you have a deficiency! Always speak to your dietitian if you are considering any vitamin, as it is more effective to obtain these vitamins through a balanced diet.
