B vitamins are a class of water-soluble vitamins. Each vitamin has a unique function; generally they help your body to produce energy and make important molecules in your cells.

There are many different types of vitamin B that we can get from eating a variety of foods from each group each day:

Vitamin B1: Thiamine
Vitamin B2: Riboflavin
Vitamin B3: Niacin
Vitamin B5: Pantothenic acid
Vitamin B6: Pyridoxine
Vitamin B7: Biotin
Vitamin B9: Folate
Vitamin B12: Cobalamin

Aside from Vitamin B12, your body cannot store these vitamins for long periods of time, so you need to replenish them regularly through eating your GO foods, GROW foods and GLOW foods each day!

Should I take a Vitamin B supplement?

It is not necessary to take a vitamin B supplement, as it is very possible to obtain all your B vitamins through your diet daily. Certain groups do have higher requirements, such as pregnant women, individuals with an autoimmune condition and individuals who are immunocompromised. Vegetarians and vegans may benefit from taking a vitamin B supplement, however, it is not at all a necessity. Speak to your dietitian if you are considering taking a vitamin B supplement, as it is vital to first try to meet your requirements through diet before supplementation.
